Drive yourself or be driven? In Marrakech, both options have their advantages, and the choice mostly depends on the type of stay you want to have. Here's how to decide.
The two options at a glance
Renting with a driver provides you with a vehicle and a professional driver for the desired duration (a day, a transfer, or the whole stay). You get in, the driver handles the rest: traffic, parking, route. Renting without a driver (classic rental) gives you the keys to the vehicle to get around completely independently, as you would with your own car.
What budget for which option?
For a classic rental, rates start around €22 to €35 per day for a standard city car (Kia Picanto, Dacia Sandero, Renault Clio, Peugeot 208), enough to get around the city easily and for short excursions. For luxury vehicles (Porsche Macan, Mercedes S-Class, Range Rover, Mercedes G-Class, Lamborghini Urus), rates range from €350 to €1,200 per day depending on the model.
With a driver, the rate includes the driving service in addition to the vehicle — generally calculated per day or per service (airport transfer, full day, excursion). It's the option to favor if you'd rather not drive abroad or if you're traveling in a group with several stops during the day.
Driving yourself in Marrakech: what you need to know
Driving in Morocco follows the same basic rules as in Europe (drive on the right, similar traffic laws), but the pace of city traffic can be surprising in the first few days: frequent honking, lots of two-wheelers, behavior that can be less predictable than in Europe. Most visitors adapt quickly. Outside the big cities, on the roads toward the Atlas or the desert, driving is generally simpler and more enjoyable, with spectacular scenery along the way.
A valid driving license (the original, not just a photo) is essential, along with an ID. For luxury vehicles, a deposit is generally required at pick-up.
With a driver: who is it best for?
A private driver makes the most sense for an airport transfer (you arrive tired after a flight, no need to find your way in an unfamiliar city), for a day excursion with several stops (Agafay desert, Ourika Valley), or simply to fully enjoy the scenery without having to focus on the road. It's also the most comfortable option for groups or families with children, where several back-and-forth trips are expected during the day.

And to get around the medina?
Whichever option you choose, keep in mind that the Marrakech medina is largely pedestrian and inaccessible by car in its narrowest alleys. If your accommodation is in the medina, plan to park (or be dropped off) nearby and finish the trip on foot — this applies to both classic rental and with a driver.
In summary
For an active stay where you want to explore at your own pace and make spontaneous stops, classic rental remains the most flexible. For a more comfortable stay, free of driving or navigation worries, a private driver is the most relaxed option — particularly recommended for airport transfers and day excursions.
